“Thanks Leila, for going to shop for towels and stuff.” Bosco said as they drove to Brendan’s school to pick him up.
Leila glanced over at Bosco. It broke her heart how they were being so formal now. They used to be so comfortable with each other, now it just seems awkward. “No…problem.”
“Ah it’s three already…we have to get back by four so that Natalie don’t have to wait for me.” Bosco glanced over at the digital clock in the car.
--
“wow…so this is Brendan’s school? It looks so nice on the outside. St. John Academy? Is it a private school?” Bosco noticed the expensive building designs. “Sure wish we went to this school when we were growing up.”
Leila gave Bosco a weak smile as she continue to push him on the wheelchair. They walked into the gate to see a bunch of students standing around as well as teachers. Some kids were walking of with their parents, and some stood with the teachers as they waited to get pick up. Leila scanned the area to look for Brendan, her eyes stopped on Ms. Mary when she saw Brendan as well as Ron standing over there. Ron saw them, and waved them over.
“Hey Lei. What are you doing here? Did you forget I said I was going to pick up Brendan today, so that you can help Bosco out?” Ron asked.
“Oh you did? I must didn’t hear you…since I’m here I can drive Brendan home.” Leila said as she looked over at Ms. Mary who was politely standing there. “Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t introduce you… this is Bosco…he’s Brendan’s father.” Leila pointed over to Bosco.
“Oh how nice to meet you.” Ms. Mary smiled as she shook Bosco’s hand. She was Ron’s old teacher as well, and was well aware of the ‘situation’.
“Well since you’re picking up Brendan, I’ll head back to clinic now, see you later.” Ron was about to give Leila a kiss on the cheek, but decided not to. “bye Bosco, Ms. Mary… Brendan.”
“bye Daddy!” Brendan called out to Ron as he walked off.
--
“Mommy, can I push Uncle Bosco?” Brendan asked as they walked back to the car. “I can go super fast if you like Uncle Bosco. Since I’m on the soccer team, I am very strong!” Brendan showed off.
“You are?” Bosco smiled. “I would love for you to push me super fast but…I don’t think Mommy wants you to push me right now, we’re near the streets so it’s a bit dangerous how about next time?”
“Oh okay.” Brendan was a bit disappointed, he really wanted to show off his ‘strength’. “Mommy said that when you were younger you used to love soccer too. Can you play with me once you get better? Mommy’s a girl…so she’s weak…and well Daddy’s not a girl…but he gets tired easy, so there’s no one I can play with.” Brendan pouted a bit.
“I would love to play with you once I get better…but you better practice first…I have to say, I play very well.” Bosco smiled from ear to ear.
--
“Sorry to keep you waiting, we thought you wouldn’t be here so early so we went to eat lunch.” Bosco apologized as they reached the front door to see Natalie sitting on her luggage waiting patiently.
“That’s okay. I got off work a bit early.” Natalie stood up to greet them. “Oh, and who is this?” Natalie looked over to the little boy. “Let me guess, he’s Bosco’s son right? He looks exactly like you.”
“Yup. He’s my other dad. My name is Brendan, and this is my mom.” Brendan introduced.
Natalie understood now. Why they looked so much like they were a couple, it was because they were a couple. The only thing that bothered her was they look in their eyes, she knew it wasn’t as simple as a divorce.
“Let’s go in now shall we, we’re beginning to look a bit crazy just standing out here” Leila opened the door.
--
Bosco walked in as he looked around. It was exactly like he remembered, nothing changed. He wondered if their wedding photo they took were still hanging on the wall in what used to be their room. “Thanks Leila for helping me out with everything today, but I can take it from here.” Bosco didn’t want take too much of her time, after all she was married now.
A sad expression wore her face. “Alright, I left my number on the table call me if you need me.” Leila walked over to Brendan and held his hand. Both Brendan and Leila walked towards the door. “bye Uncle Bosco!” Brendan called out before leaving.
--
Bosco sat on their old bed as he thought of the many memories they shared, his mind was temporarily shut off to the world, for he didn’t hear the knock on the door.
“Mr. Wong?” Natalie opened the door to walk in when she didn’t hear him reply. She walked over to him and gently shook his shoulder. “Are you okay?”
Feeling the shake, Bosco quickly snapped out of his thoughts. “Oh! I’m sorry Natalie…I was just thinking about something. Is there something you need?”
“Oh. I just wanted to ask what you wanted for dinner.” Natalie replied as her eyes roamed the room. She didn’t want to be nosy but once she saw the large picture frame on the wall, she couldn’t help but wonder.
Bosco following her glaze, understood. “Look…I know I told you me and Leila wasn’t married…and then the whole Brendan thing, along with the wedding photo kind of confuses you, so let me explain.”
Natalie shook her head. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to be nosy…if it makes you uncomfortable then don’t say it.” Natalie saw the hesitation in his eyes when he spoke.
“It’s okay. You’re my nurse and I know it seem weird…I don’t want to treat you like a outsider.” Bosco assured. “Leila and I were dating, and planned on marriage, we had a child together, but I got in a car accident and went into a coma. Leila is married to someone else now.” Bosco made it short. Though he didn’t want to treat Natalie like an outsider, he didn’t want to their her his life time story.
